Key Technology and Its Application of MW-Scale Converter in Battery Energy Storage System

Abstract: Large-scale battery energy storage system (ESS) is the key technology of smart grid and future ESS station, which will be widely applied in renewable energy integration, power system frequency and peak load adjustment, and demand response, etc. This paper presents the topological structure and control strategy of a MW-scale ESS converter. Based on the strong support of Beijing Science & Technology Administration and Jingneng Group, this paper verifies the feasibility and correctness of the proposed technical route, from the whole processes of basic theory, simulation analysis, low voltage physical model in laboratory and MW-scale demonstration project. The practice shows that the proposed technical route for the large-scale ESS converter has laid the technological foundation for the future MW or ten MW ESS station, which has achieved the level of engineering practical application.
