Modeling and Control of PV-Supercapacitor Hybrid System

Abstract: To solve the randomness and strong fluctuation of power output of photovoltaic (PV) power generation, this paper proposes a kind of control strategy of PV-supercapacitor (SC) hybrid system. We construct the mathematical model of PV and SC; present the structure PV, SC and controlled DC load being linked in the DC-BUS to reduce the number of converters and saving cost; and deduce the control equation of each system. The SC can charge and discharge rapidly, which contributes to stabilize the voltage fluctuation of DC-BUS. A kind of controllable DC load is put in and cut out flexibly to ensure SOC (state of charge) of SC running in the setting range. Finally, this kind of control strategy can smooth the internet power, improve the PV efficiency, and stabilize the DC-BUS voltage. The simulation results in the PSCAD/EMTDC verify the accuracy of the PV-SC hybrid system model and the effectiveness of the control strategy.
