Abstract:

Meteorological data of Yongxing weather station in Xisha from 1973 to 2011 were collected and analyzed. The annual mean wind speed, wind power density, utilization hour of specific wind turbine and annual energy output were calculated using Weibull statistical distribution and wind power curve of specific wind turbine. Combined with daily extreme wind speed data from 1973 to 2011, the extreme wind of 50-year recurrence interval was calculated using Peak over Threshold (POT) approach and Generalized Pareto distribution model. The analysis results show that the wind power density of Yongxing Island is less than expected, which is below 100W/m2 in a typical year, and it concentrates in the latter half of the year with more tropical cyclones, although the Yongxing Island is located in the deep sea. Moreover, the extreme wind of 50-year recurrence interval is 42.2 m/s, which is significantly higher than reference wind speed (27 m/s) on the land. Therefore, the wind turbine of higher class should be adopted in wind power development in Xisha.
