Abstract:

Appropriate planning of charging facilities is of significant importance for the development of electric vehicles (EVs). Given this background, a systematical approach for siting and sizing of EV charging facilities based on geographical zonal EV charging demand coefficients is proposed. A charging load prediction model is presented at first, based on the analysis of various charging modes. The demands for different charging facilities are subsequently calculated with the inputs of daily energy charging needs and the maximum plug-in numbers for all types of EVs. Then, the planning region is divided into different geographical zones, and the charging demand coefficient in each zone is determined. These zones with higher charging demand coefficients are selected as the candidates for installing charging facilities, and the demands for the charging facilities in these candidate zones are also determined. Finally, the planning scenario of EV charging facilities in Hangzhou is employed to illustrate the essential features of the developed  method.
