Abstract:  ABSTRACT:  Oscillations in power systems often herald stability problems and incur stability concerns. Therefore, it is important to detect oscillations at their early stages so that effective remedial actions can be taken in time. Previously, a self-coherence method was proposed to detect sustained oscillations using phasor measurement unit (PMU) data. This paper extends the self-coherence method by introducing multiple time-delay to improve the oscillation detection accuracy. Simulation data from a simple model and the 16-machine 68-bus model are generated and used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Using hypothesis testing, it is shown that the proposed multi-delay method can effectively increase the accuracy of oscillation detection.
