Research Status and Prospect of Energy Storage Application under Energy Internet Background

Abstract: The integration of more and more large-scale renewable energy generation and distributed renewable energy generation brings new problems and challenges for the power system operation and planning. Energy storage is the indispensable resource to achieve the absorption of renewable energy generation with the high ratio integration. This paper firstly introduces main types of electric storage systems from the perspectives of energy conversion principles, technical advantages and disadvantages and applicable ranges, and mainly discusses thermal storage as well as power-to-gas and power-to-hydrogen storage. On this basis, this paper combs and analyzes the research status of energy storage in different sectors of power systems, i.e., power generation, transmission, distribution and demand sides, and multiple energy system interconnections under the background of energy internet. Lastly, this paper gives an outlook of the challenges and the corresponding research directions on the application of energy storage in the future.
