Restraining Strategy of Photovoltaic Power Fluctuation Based on Energy Storage Battery

Abstract: To restrain the photovoltaic (PV) power fluctuation and optimize the output characteristics of PV power, this paper proposes an on-line operation strategy for the battery energy storage system (BESS) based on 2 groups of battery topology and the optimal capacity determination method for double BESSs, based on the wavelet packet decomposition of PV power fluctuation frequency characteristics. In the model, 2 sets of BESS working states are charging and discharging states respectively. When any BESS arrives at their status of adequate charging or discharging, double BESSs switch their states at the same time. Based on the measured data of PV power plant, we verify the proposed scheme. The results show that the proposed scheme not only can have good restraining effect in PV power output characteristics, but also reduce battery charge and discharge times of BESS in the battery characteristics and improve the utilization efficiency of energy storage system because of using double BESSs.
